Milwaukee Brewers vs Chicago Cubs
By Justin Gonzalez
Pick: Brewers +120
The Milwaukee Brewers (24-17, 8-9 Home) are taking on the Chicago Cubs (23-14, 14-6 Home) in the finale of a three-game series and will send out their right-handed starting pitcher Jhoulys Chacin to face 14-year veteran left-handed starting pitcher Jon Lester.
The Brewers seven-game win streak came to a halt Saturday as they lost a 15-inning marathon to the Cubs by a 2-1 final score. The Cubs have been playing great baseball too having won 10 of the last 12 games. Both teams have chased down the former-division leading St. Louis Cardinals in a week. The National League Central Division remains the most competitive division in MLB with the third place Cardinals just 2.5 games out of the lead, fourth place Pittsburgh Pirates 4.5 games out, and last place Cincinnati Reds 6.5 games out. So, even though it is only May, these divisional games take on greater meaning as the results from these games will determine the division Champion.
Lester has had a great 14-year career and is still pitching at an elite level at the age of 35. He was sidelined for more than two weeks with hamstring injury and returned to the mound in top form. Since returning from the injury he has made three starts and compiled a 0.50 ERA and 0.778 WHIP allowing just one earned run, one walk, and recording 19 strikeouts spanning 18 innings of work.
Despite this great work he has struggled against the current members of the Brewers allowing a .302 batting average with Ryan Braun and Lorenzo Cain each having eight hits and batting .400 and .364 respectively against Lester.
The popular pick would be to go with the Cubs due to their edge on the mound but I think some of that edge is nullified due to how well the Brewers have hit Lester. They are very familiar with him and I believe we are getting good value at +120.
